Fontaine calls for speed limits on sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety

Councillor Daniel Fontaine introduced a motion at Monday’s Council meeting that if passed will improve pedestrian safety by introducing speed limits on sidewalks. Currently there are no limits on how fast you can go if you are using an e-scooter or e-bike on a sidewalk. This has led to a very unsafe situation and conflict between pedestrians and e-scooters on many New Westminster streets.

“I’m hoping that Council will support my motion and explore what imposing a speed limit on our sidewalks could do to help improve pedestrian safety,” says Fontaine. “We all agree that pedestrians are our number one priority and all of our policies and bylaw enforcement should reinforce that belief.”

Fontaine appeared on the Mike Smyth Show to talk about his motion. You can click on the CKNW image below to listen to the entire segment. Global TV also interviewed Fontaine about this initiative.

“I’ve had very positive reaction from the public since I introduced this motion,” says Fontaine. “A lot of people say it’s just common sense and something that should have been implemented years ago. I couldn’t agree more.”
